Rejecting AI in Academia means surrendering its control to capitalism

The deployment of AI tools such as Gemini and ChatGPT in France is a cause for concern. These technologies undermine democracy and privacy, and increase misinformation, concentrated power, and inequality. While some scientists are calling for a moratorium on their development, others oppose their use in universities for fear of abuse. It is crucial that we develop a critical understanding of these technologies, rather than leaving them in the hands of a few oligopolies. Universities must play a role in analysing and experimenting with AI to promote its ethical and collective use. Failing to teach students about this field leaves them in the dark and constitutes an abdication of responsibility.
