Amidst the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine and the growing tide of authoritarianism and neo-despotism, which are rooted in a culture of suspicion and are reshaping the landscape of the rule of law, academic freedom is under mounting pressure, even within the confines of liberal democracies. The first issue of 2025 offers a collective reflection on academic freedom in various contexts and under different constraints, drawing from the authors’ personal experiences. It brings together original texts and previously published texts from Political Anthropological Research on International Social Sciences (PARISS), Cultures & Conflits’ sister journal, which have been translated and contextualized. This issue aims to analyze the dynamics underlying the deterioration of teaching and research professions, particularly those reflecting the « misery of the world of homo academicus(es), » and encourage collective reflection on strategies of resistance.
